Frequently Asked Questions – Access Control

Central Georgia Technology Assistant

Yes! Your users can unlock doors from their phones using the UniFi Identity app or Apple Wallet Touch Pass.

Yes. Devices can be manually engaged or bypassed depending on the situation to ensure optimal safety during emergencies such as fires, lockdowns, and evacuations.

When integrated with UniFi Protect cameras, emergency events can also be visually reviewed alongside synchronized camera footage, providing additional situational awareness during critical incidents.

Yes. UniFi Access readers support cards and fobs using all 13.56 MHz NFC protocols, including ISO 14443A, ISO 14443B, and ISO 15693.

UniFi Access supports electric strikes, electric bolts, and magnetic locks through both dry and powered relays (12V, up to 1A). It can also integrate with most third-party locks.

If a lock does not support 12V powered relays or draws more than 1A, a dry relay with an external power supply must be used.

Ubiquiti also offers magnetic and electric locks that are recommended if you do not already have door hardware.

During our consultation, we will make specific recommendations based on your building and security requirements.

Both magnetic and electric locks serve important purposes:

  • Magnetic locks are fail-safe, meaning the door unlocks during a power outage.
  • Electric locks are fail-secure, meaning the door remains locked during a power outage.

Proper planning is important when designing your access control system. In many cases, we recommend using USW Mission Critical, which includes battery backup to maintain door operation during outages.

Any magnetic or electric lock that operates at 12V and up to 1A can be powered directly by the UniFi Access Hub. Locks that exceed these requirements can still be used with a dry relay and external power supply.

We recommend Ubiquiti Access Lock Magnetic and Access Lock Electric, as they are fully vetted and tested. Some lower-quality third-party locks may experience issues over longer cable distances.

No. For security reasons, UniFi Access readers must connect to a UniFi Access Control Hub and cannot connect directly to a PoE switch.

This design minimizes vulnerabilities and ensures a secure, tamper-resistant access control system.

No. UniFi Access is a fully integrated ecosystem and does not support door hubs or access readers made by other manufacturers.

Yes. UniFi Access can remain operational during a power outage when paired with a battery-backup solution, such as a Switch Mission Critical or a UPS on network switches.

Access permissions are synchronized directly with the UniFi Access Hub, so even if the UniFi Console goes offline, doors will continue to function.

When cameras and access control are both backed up, access events and video footage remain available for review, ensuring continuity during power disruptions.

Central Georgia Technology will ensure your system is properly designed and configured for power-loss scenarios.

Yes. When UniFi Access is integrated with UniFi Protect, door access events such as unlocks, denied access attempts, and forced door alerts are logged at the same time as camera footage.

  • See exactly who accessed a door and when
  • Review video tied directly to access events
  • Quickly investigate incidents without manually searching timelines

Yes. By correlating door access logs with camera footage, organizations gain a complete and verifiable record of events. This improves accountability, reduces investigation time, and supports compliance and security audits.

No. The integration between UniFi Access and UniFi Protect is native and does not require third-party software or recurring licensing fees.

Yes. The UniFi Access application supports multi-site management. Users can unlock doors across multiple sites using UniFi Identity. However, key cards and fobs are assigned per site.

Central Georgia Technology will set up all users and provide training so you can manage sites confidently on your own.

Yes. Central Georgia Technology will configure access control and camera integrations, ensure events are properly synchronized, and provide training so your team can confidently review and investigate incidents.
